Who won all the Oscars this year? Europeans? Wow. The Academy does have standards. If confusion arises the premise goes like this: Art and Entertainment are NOT THE SAME. Nope. The proof- we do not know who Frenchy Best Actress is.. but we know Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson. Frenchy is Art- Linds and Jessie- Entertainment.
Art- a personal/cultural expression that has layers of meaning within an educated aesthetic, skill, or craft. The viewer can bring their own experience into the perception of an art work.
Entertainment – a cultural entity created for diversion and amusement, an escape- purposely devoid of deep meaning. Opiate of the masses…
So don’t feel bad America- the hype was better than reality this year at the Oscars, because nobody knows who these Euros are. We missed those films because of the Writers strike and Reality television.
To remedy our ignorance to European culture we should look at what we teach our children: Art and Soccer. Lots of Art classes and Soccer practices after school for the children of America, but what happens after age 12? Why do we tease them with the idea that their future will involve Art and Soccer? I wish my world still involved Art and Soccer – and it Doesn’t! Where are the 25-45 year old art classes with nice teachers, facilities and free supplies. Where are the adult soccer leagues for Men and Women- who certainly could use a run around a nice green field after sitting at a computer all day? There is no excuse accept laziness and lack of ingenuity because American girls were raised to play just as much soccer as American boys.
We need these European cultural implementations of Art and Soccer to stick past age 12 or we may never win another Oscar again. As our population spends more and more time complaining about being fat and sitting on their asses watching reality televison—those Europeans might usurp our Entertainment and turn it into Art?!!
