The California Assembly recently proposed Bill 107.45 to ban the Suit from the male wardrobe. This bold move comes after years of complaints from Superior, Appellate and Supreme Court judges that the litigators they face every day, “wear the most atrocious suits—and simply cannot be taken seriously”. The bill cites several other reasons why male California residents, “appear to be in severe discomfort when wearing a full suit with shirt and tie. It’s a human rights issue. “ Claims Rep. Laurie Harper (D) from San Diego County, who continues on, “The result is a male population that just looks stupid, not smart, which is the intention of the suit, since coat and tie is just not working in California, we are going to take a progressive measure and outlaw the wardrobe option altogether.
Both, Republicans and Democrats are rallying behind Bill 107.45, agreeing that “Looking bad in a suit is worse than not wearing one,” says Rep. Edward Patterson (R) of Carmel, “the sanctions against the suit are long overdue, nobody wants to wear a suit to work anymore.”
The Bill will allow certain exceptions to British Citizens, and American men raised in Manhattan, NY, but all other instances, the State is not convinced the suit will be worn responsibly and there is a possibility for misuse. “We’ve seen skate shoes worn with suits and tie knots way to high up on the neck to look remotely appealing.” Rep. Deborah Cohen (D) Los Angeles County, “We are saving money we would have to spend on education about how to wear a suit and how to spot a bad suit. This has traditionally been integrated into education systems in Britain and New York City, but California’s hope for that kind of funding is long gone.”
